Our mission is to fight homelessness in Hendricks County by coordinating immediate shelter and needs assistance programs alongside longer term compassionate support services for families in all areas of life.
We believe that both immediate and longer term support are required to effectively eliminate homelessness. Homelessness is a complex issue involving many facets of life. In truth, homelessness affects the whole of society, not just the homeless individual or family. We hope to eventually break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through many avenuesperhaps most importantly by simply treating homeless individuals and families like human beings rather than social outcasts. To change things, true compassion and empathy at a societal level must be harnessed so that the homeless begin to understand that they are not alone in this world. Change will not come quickly, but with persistence, hope, and love we believe we can greatly change the face of homelessness.

My fiancé and I moved to plainfield about a month ago with the thought that my fiancé had received a great job opportunity. We were residing in Martinsville IN when he had been informed and hired for the job. it was great news for us considering the city of Martinsviile was taking his grandmothers how with intent to demo it down. we had called and made arrangments with his new boss to help us by paying for a hotel room until we could pay with his check (which was held back 2 weeks), well when we arrived at the hotel we thought we were going to be staying at we called his boss. He retracked everything he had agreed apoun and informed us that he would not be doing paying for anything. we had $200 in our pocket for food and other items we may need. that money had to go to a room for us. we had no food and no money. We met a nice young couple who told us about family promise and how they had helped them. seemed like a blessing. It most certainly was at first but quickly turned sour. at first we were told we couldn't get any help at all even after being told of the situation and the fact we were now on the streets of hendericks county with no car and all of our posessions in trash bags. finally they decided to help and paid for a week. then things went down hill. We tried to find work, help, or somewhere to go but nothing. we called Family Promise I left a message in great detail of who I was and who I had spoken to hoping for a call back that I never received. I had to call them again for them to inform the woman I was working with to call me. I had to do thus twice before I received a call from her. they agreed to pay a second week, after she made me feel judged and low like I wasn't up to her standards. when I called at the end of the 2nd week asking to speak to someone none would call me back or pick up while I waited on hold. after I hung up and called back multiple times the volunteer desk lady informed me that they told her they would no longer be able to help us. I asked if I could please speak to someone and she said that they already said they couldn't help. finally she told me she saw the woman walking by and would tell her to speak to me. as soon as she picked up the phone the first words to come out of her mouth were that they were no longer going to be able to help us. I cried and begged and pleaded for them to reconsider that we really have been trying to do everything we need to do it was still a no. she also told me that I used the same story to them before which was false. she made me feel lesser, she spoke to me with and tone to her voice that made me feel stupid and bullied and as if she really didn't care about my situation. All I hear is praises about this place and how they help but the way I was treated does not match the stories I have heard.
